If you’ve never read “Galveston” by Nic Pizzolatto, then do yourself a favor this cold, miserable winter and run right out and get it (or do what I do and just order it so it will be delivered straight to your door, no need to go out). This is no Perry Mason mystery, but a gritty, sad, and compassionate story of an ex-con and his own journey to becoming a man he can bear to look at in the mirror. Well, actually, it’s more than that–and better than that. But that same darkness and grit can be found in the new series “True Detective,” developed and written by Pizzolatto. I’m most happy to see that this man has taken his talents beyond the walls (and confines) of academia to a place where his writing can take new forms. As for the series, McConaughey has hit a new high as an actor. As with most actors who can make it to middle age in the film industry, he’s found his reward in roles like the one in “True Detective,” roles that no longer depend on his good looks.
